Other Names Sorghastrum nutans (NGN), Sorghastrum nutans 1 Gal.
Family Poaceae
Description

Sorghastrum nutans, commonly known as Indian Grass, is a warm-season, native perennial grass found throughout much of the central and eastern United States. This species is characterized by its tall, slender stems that sway gracefully in the wind, topped with distinctive golden-bronze inflorescences in late summer and fall. The plant's lush, green foliage provides a striking contrast to the shimmering flowers.

Growing 4-6 feet tall, Indian Grass thrives in full sun and well-drained, dry to average soils. It forms attractive clumps that spread slowly via rhizomes, making it suitable for use in prairie plantings, meadows, ornamental grasses beds, and naturalistic landscaping. Beyond its ornamental appeal, Sorghastrum nutans is a valuable component of native ecosystems, providing food and cover for a variety of wildlife, including birds and small mammals. This adaptable and low-maintenance grass is an excellent choice for adding year-round interest and ecological benefits to gardens and landscapes.

Named Cultivars Sorghastrum nutans 'Bluebird', Sorghastrum nutans 'Golden Sunset', Sorghastrum nutans 'Indian Steel', Sorghastrum nutans 'Sioux Blue', Sorghastrum nutans 'St. Louis', Sorghastrum nutans 'Tomahawk'
